Archived: Syrian Christians for Peace Gratefulness to Pope Francis for His Stance on the Syrian Refugees
The Syrian Christians for Peace Organization expresses its gratitude to His Holiness, Pope Francis for his initiative toward the Syrian refugees, who lost their houses due to artillery bombardments, as His Holiness decided recently to bring back with him three Syrian families to the Vatican in an attempt at blessing them with hope of a new life-building. We do see in this initiative a commitment to the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ, which calls for love and fraternity, away from any bigotry, among human beings and also invites for standing against injustice in support of the oppressed and the vulnerable.
We in the Syrian Christians for Peace Organization affirm the content of the message, which His Holiness Pope Francis wanted to convey to the whole world via this initiative, namely that the entire components of the Syrian puplic, and not just certain segments within it, suffer from the ramifications of destruction, displacement and violence. In the speech which his Holiness gave in the Greek island, Lesbos, there was a very significant phrase: “you are not alone”. This sentence pointed to the necessity of a wholistic human solidarity in the face of this human catastrophe. Pope Francis also called the refugees to cling to hope. We read in such a call an invitation for ceasing the international indifference toward the refugees’ cause in general, and the Syrians’ in particular.
Be that as it may, we do invite all the religious leaders, as well as our Syrian brothers and sisters, to follow the example of this noble movement, in accordance with the values of the heavenly religions. And we also remind all that our ability to re-build Syria as a country for all its people depends on our ability to consolidate citizenship and overcome all the traces of confessionalism.
